'PETE BREWER' SCHOLARSHIP FOR CIVIC INVOLVEMENT
Principals, Guidance Counselors, Teachers,
This communication is in regard to a Scholarship opportunity for your students who are residents of Hollywood and graduating this year from McArthur, South Broward, Hallandale or Hollywood Hills High School.
Our organization, the Hollywood Council of Civic Associations (HCCA), is a non-profit, community based Civic group, comprised of neighborhood Civic Associations from around the City.
The Scholarship is named for one of our founding members, "Pete Brewer". Mr. Brewer was a Community Activist who worked on many issues affecting our City. To honor his legacy, is the underlying reason for embarking on this Scholarship program in his name. As such we wanted the main qualification to include a requirement with respect to Civic or Community involvement.
The award will be supplemental at best for the high cost of higher education, but every little bit helps. We can award three $1000 Scholarships this year. With continued fund-raisers and donations the hope is that we can increase the amount every year.
The candidates should be planning to attend an accredited vocational school, or a two or four-year college or university.
Scholarship recipients are to be selected by the HCCA on the basis of the following; applicant's academic record, potential to succeed, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, a statement of education and career goals, and any unusual personal or family circumstances.
Recipients are selected on an objective and competitive basis considering academic, we would like in the neighborhood of a 2.5 G.P.A., and non-academic factors. Recommendations from School Staff will weigh heavily in the decision process.
Again this is what we hope will be many years of providing a little help for resident students. Help us in this small way to help the Students. We are always open to process suggestions for program improvement.
